What exactly is a margherita pizza? It’s a traditional and popular pizza hailing from the Province of Naples, Italy. Named in honor of Queen Margherita and her husband, King Umberto of Savoy, who visited Naples in 1889. The toppings used in this classic pizza represent the Italian flag—red tomatoes, green fresh basil leaves, and white fresh mozzarella. An authentic margherita pizza is often cooked in a wood-fired pizza oven, creating a base for the toppings that is thin, airy, and crispy.
The art of making the original recipe is so important in the culinary world, that in 2010, it gained the designation of STG, Specialità Tradizionale Garantita, which means it’s a traditional food product protected under European Union. And in 2017, the art of Neapolitan pizza making was honored with UNESCO’s “intangible cultural heritage” rating.
While true to the flavors of the original, we’ve simplified the recipe so that you don’t have to go to Naples to enjoy it. Our homemade margherita pizza recipe uses the same delicious combination of toppings, but is so easy and fun to make, it can even be enjoyed on a busy weeknight.
