Ingredients
- 2/3 cup butter, softened
- 2/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar
- 1/3 cup molasses
- 1/3 cup water
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon anise seed
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon cloves
- 1/8 teaspoon cardamom
- 1/8 teaspoon pepper
- 1 cup chopped nuts
- 1 cup powdered sugar

Step1In large bowl, combine butter and brown sugar; beat until light and fluffy. Stir in molasses and water. Lightly spoon flour into measuring cup; level off. Add flour, cinnamon, baking soda, salt, anise seed, nutmeg, cloves, cardamom and pepper; blend well. Stir in nuts. Cover with plastic wrap; refrigerate 2 hours for easier handling.

Step2Heat oven to 350°F. Shape dough into 1-inch balls; place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets.

Step3Bake at 350°F. for 9 to 12 minutes or until bottoms are golden brown. Immediately remove from cookie sheets. Roll in powdered sugar.
